Most true wireless earbuds come with a selection of ear tips, giving you a good chance to find a pair that fits your ears well. As good a fit as they deliver, though, it’s never a perfect fit, since people’s ears are as unique as our individual fingerprints. Because ear buds never wear perfectly flush, that opens it to the possibility of dislodging at some point. The UE Fits solves this problem by having tips that perfectly conform to the contours of your ears.
That’s right, these earbuds come with customized ear tips that are molded to the specific shape of your ears. And no, you don’t have to come in to a shop for a custom-fitting or wait weeks to get your custom-sized buds, as you can do the custom molding all by your lonesome.
The UE Fits actually comes with ear tips covered in a shapeless blob of gel. As such, when you pop it in your ears for the first time, it will automatically conform to the natural shape of your ears. From there, you launch the companion app and connect it to the earbuds, which will then initiate the molding process. As it turns out, each of the ear buds have their own set of embedded LEDs, which will emit UV light and cause the gel to harden as they sit in your ears. The app will inform you once the molding process is finished, at which point, the ear tips assume a permanent shape. According to Ultimate Ears, the whole molding process takes just 60 seconds.
Because the ear tips are molded exactly to the exact contours of your ears, they should be extremely comfortable and secure, ensuring they will stay in place even when you engage in high-action activities. It also facilitates the best possible passive noise insulation, since every nook and cranny of your ear’s crevasse is properly filled out, allowing it to easily block out any and all outside noise.
The UE Fits are equipped with 10mm drivers that, the outfit claims, can produce a sound that’s warm and detailed, with a tight bass that packs a strong punch. While there’s no way to really know how a pair sounds like without putting them on, it’s always a good idea to look at an outfit’s track record. Before being acquired by Logitech in 2008, Ultimate Ears was best known for manufacturing in-ear monitors for professional musicians. While the outfit has kept up that portion of the business, they’ve also branched out into larger consumer categories, including wireless speakers and, in this particular case, true wireless earbuds.
The earbuds hold enough juice to last up to 8 hours of playback, with another 20 hours’ worth of power available from the charging case. It also offers a 10-minute quick charge that gives you an hour’s worth of listening for those times you run out of juice unexpectedly. Other features include dual microphones for taking hands-free calls and sweat-proof construction, so you can enjoy them during each of your workouts.
The UE Fits are now available for preorder, priced at $199.
