I’ll probably never own a convertible that can go 200 mph. And I’m fine with that. But, dammit, don’t you just wish you’re as loaded as a Saudi prince every time you see cars like this McLaren MP4-12C Spider?
A lot of things about the car is similar to the coupe version, with all 2013 updates thrown in for good measure. That is, save for the top, of course. In its place, the convertible gets a unique RHT folding roof system that can be electronically operated even while you speed through the roads. Okay, I was exaggerating — you need to slow down at around 19mph to either deploy the roof or reel it back in.
The McLaren MP4-12C Spider is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine pumping out 616 horses, mated to a 7-speed SSG dual-clutch transmission. Similar to the coupe, it can clear a 0 to 60 in just 3.1 seconds, although speed hits a slightly lower ceiling at 204 mph (the hard top can do 207). Features include a one-piece molded chassis, a see-thru window to the power plant behind the tonneau cover (just in case you want to admire your car’s guts), a passive rollover protection system and a rear windscreen system that can also be controlled electronically. For the cabin, you get a choice of decking the interior in either semi-aniline perforated leather or Alcantara upholstery.
