Most external hard drives are designed to be tucked away. What’s the point of having them take space in your desk when they will do the job just fine if you tuck them in a drawer and hook them up to the PC from there? The LaCie Mirror, however, makes a point of serving a secondary purpose: you can use it as a mirror to check your hair, lipstick, or the ugly zit that grew out of your forehead at any point in the day.
Designed by Pauline Deltour, the drive case takes on a conventional boxy shape, just like other external hard drives you can grab off any store shelf. Except, instead of traditional case materials, it’s enclosed in scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 3 that’s been rendered in a reflective mirror finish.
The LaCie Mirror includes a wooden display stand for showing the drive off on your desk, with an integrated slot in front for setting down a pen, so it can double as a limited desk organizer. When set up, the drive is tilted at a slight angle, making it easy to take a quick glance to check whether any sugar or jelly from the half-dozen mini-donuts you just had made their way to your face. Inside, the mirrored casing houses a 1TB hard drive, with a USB 3.0 interface that allows maximum transfer rates of 5 Gbps. Dimensions are 3.1 x 5 x 0.5 inches for the drive, with the stand measuring 3.1 x 6.1 x 0.6 inches.
Set to launch end of January, the LaCie Mirror is priced at $279.99.
