Thing has always been one of the most interesting characters in The Addams Family. It’s a severed hand that can move on its own, after all, making it such a unique addition that’s equal parts creepy and useful. As such, there’s been no shortage of Thing toys over the years, with the character showing up as a plush doll, a die-cast figure, and even in various articulated forms. We have to admit, though, seeing it as a motorized RC takes the cake, which is what makes the Jada Toys Wednesday Addams Thing RC arguably our favorite.
That’s right, they made a radio-controlled Thing figure that can stand on its fingers and move around, allowing you to set it up so you have a severed hand prancing around on your coffee table while your RC Baby Yoda watches on. Granted, it doesn’t move in the smoothest way imaginable, almost looking like its crawling in a very slow manner and covering very little distance in every stride. We have to admit, though, that just makes it even creepier, which we absolutely love.
The Jada Toys Wednesday Addams Thing RC doesn’t actually give you fine control of the fingers. That means, you can’t make the severed hand fetch packages, light your cigars, or challenge you to an arm wrestling match like the onscreen horror character does. Instead, what it has are nubs under the fingertips, which it uses to perform those creepy crawling movements. From the looks of it, the onboard motor, basically, pops the nubs in and out to get the hand to move in that slow, trudging manner befitting the creepy character it portrays.
Can you put this Thing in charge of looking after your daughter while she goes off to boarding school in Nevermore Academy. Absolutely not. However, you can definitely use it to creep out your grandparents, give your sister a jump scare when she opens her closet, and generally have a fun time goofing around with a creepy severed hand that looks like it’s moving by itself.
The Jada Toys Wednesday Addams Thing RC comes with a small controller with a control clad in the likeness of a severed hand, much like the character it’s meant to operate. While it looks like a joystick, it’s apparently just a toggle switch that lets you set the character to either crawl forward or turn to the side. Yes, those are the only two movements it can do, so this version of the Thing isn’t quite as animated as its onscreen counterpart.
What it manages to replicate, though, is the fictional character’s creepy looks, which they manage to recreate using intricate paint and stitching details that make it appear like a real severed hand straight off one of the corpses at the morgue. It’s made from soft plastic to give it that skin-like feel, with some skin and fingernail detailing to dial in the realism a bit. The RC, by the way, is rechargeable via USB, although there’s no rating as to how long it can run between charges, while the controller runs on two AAA batteries.
The Jada Toys Wednesday Addams Thing RC is available now.
