Carrying your own coffee cup is great for minimizing waste. Problem is, having to carry that travel mug even after you’re done drinking coffee is just inconvenient. That’s why we’re big fans of collapsible coffee cups, as they let you drink with a reusable cup that you can easily put away when not in use. The Hunu, though, does all collapsible cups we’ve seen before by collapsing into a really slim pile.
How slim? Well, the darn thing measures just 0.75 inches when collapsed. That means, you can slip it in your pants pocket and it won’t create any discomfort, allowing you to walk, sit, and move normally with a functional cup in tow, ready to use at any time. Granted, it’s a little wide when collapsed, so if you have one of those narrower pockets, it may not quite push in all the way through.
The Hunu is an 8oz coffee cup that can fit any standard-sized drinks from your favorite coffee shop (it’s sized to fit comfortably under espresso machines), whether you enjoy getting your morning caffeine jolt from lattes, cappuccinos, or double shots of espresso. It has a shape that tapers down significantly from top to bottom, with multiple ridges throughout the cup’s body where it’s able to fold. As such, the lower sections get nested inside the section right above them during collapse, allowing the whole thing to look like a neat little disc once it’s completely folded down.
It comes with a lid to lock in the hot temperatures, which comes with an inner edge at the bottom to secure on the top of the cup and a small cutout to let you take small sips of the beverage inside. A removable insulating band is included so you can grab the cup even with the hottest drinks in tow, which you can also strap across the collapsed disc whenever the cup is not in use. That way, you can keep the whole cup in one place at all times.
The Hunu is made from a blend of bamboo and silicone that is BPA-free and fully non-toxic, all while allowing you to enjoy your daily coffee without the accompanying waste of endless paper cups. Because it uses non-porous silicone, the cup is dishwasher-safe, so you can just throw it in for cleaning along with the dishes as soon as you get home. The outfit does claim it cleans very easily, requiring just a quick rinse to clean off, so you might just want to clean it in a dishwasher any time one is available.
According to the outfit, the cup technically holds 10 ounces. However, putting that volume of drink means you’re going to fill it to the brim, which isn’t the safest thing to do when dealing with steaming hot beverages like coffee and tea. Yeah, just keep your drinks to 8oz levels, unless you want to deal with hot liquids dripping all over your chin.
A Kickstarter campaign is currently running for the Hunu. You can reserve a unit for pledges starting at $24.
