Lightsabers are awesome. They are, however, pretty common in the Star Wars universe, with Jedis, Siths, and other Force-sensitive characters using the plasma-bladed sword as a frequent fighting weapon of choice. You know what’s not so common? The Darksaber, a one-of-a-kind laser sword revealed to be in Moff Gideon’s possession at the end of The Mandalorian’s first season. Yeah, Moff seemed really proud to have that one. What he didn’t know is, you can have your own in the form of the Hasbro Star Wars Mandalorian Darksaber Lightsaber.
We know, it’s not the real Darksaber. That means, it’s neither the ancient weapon created by the first Mandalorian in the Jedi Order nor does it possess the special abilities that made it more powerful than a conventional lightsaber. It is, however, a sweet-looking toy replica that will let you slay countless lightsaber-armed Jedis, Siths, and Mandalores alike.
The Hasbro Star Wars Mandalorian Darksaber Lightsaber recreates the black-bladed lightsaber from the franchise, from the slightly curved blade and surface markings to the straight rectangular hilt and angular pommel. It’s shorter than a standard lightsaber just like the one we’ve seen onscreen, but bears a long enough hilt that it can be wielded with two hands, so you can put the full force of your entire upper body on every attack.
Swinging the sword triggers the built-in lightsaber battle sounds, making it feel like you’re actually engaged in a laser sword fight at some planet in a galaxy far, far away. The sounds, by the way, are inspired from scenes out of The Clone Wars animated series, where the weapon ended up in the possession of the Death Watch leader, Pre Vizsla. These are all just weapon sounds, by the way, so you won’t get any dialog or added effects, which is a lot better, since it feels like you’re swinging an actual Force weapon.
The Hasbro Star Wars Mandalorian Darksaber Lightsaber comes with light-up blade edges that will make that black blade really stand out when you’re fighting in a dimly-lit room. A button on the hilt allows you to activate the light effects (you need to hold it down), which, the product page claims, summons the power of lightning. Yes, we have no idea what that means, either, but the light effects do look nice just from looking at the product photos. And no, we’re certain it doesn’t invoke actual lightning in any shape or form, so it’s safe to use in your home. The electronics, by the way, require three AAA batteries to operate.
According to the product page, it’s designed for kids five and up. Based on what we’ve seen, though, it is quite bulky, a direct result of the hilt’s angular shape, so smaller kids might have a hard time handling this. For bigger kids and kids-at-heart who collect Star Wars toys the way only an avid diehard would, though, this seems to be just the right size.
