Like regular paint, you can apply this material to your walls and ceilings using brushes, rollers, and sprays. Unlike them, it’s designed to dry into an elastic film that you can peel off away from the surface at any time, allowing you to remove the entire coat of paint without damaging whatever sits underneath. It’s very convenient.
Billed as the world’s “first multi-surface removable paint,” the Glasst Unpaint allows you to easily peel off the entire coat as soon as you get tired of it, so you can paint your entire living room green for the Christmas holidays and peel it off completely as soon as the new year rolls around. It looks and feels like real paint, too, so the color appears just as permanent as any other paint coating around the house.
According to the outfit, the temporary paint can be applied much like any other architectural paint in the market. That means, you can apply it using a brush, roller, or spray, so you can quickly cover big areas and detail small nooks as needed. For a good finish, they recommend applying two to three coats of the paint, allowing 60 minutes of drying time between each to let it set. Once you finish with the coats, you need to wait 24 hours for the whole coat to fully dry, at which point it turns into an elastic film.
The Glasst Unpaint is supposed to be very durable once fully dried in its elastic film state, allowing it to stay intact through all the contact house coatings receive on a daily basis. Unlike traditional paint, though, the color isn’t absorbed into the nooks, tight crevices, and tiny pores across a surface. Instead, the film just clings on top of whatever surface it’s applied to, making it possible to peel it off like a giant sticker. According to Glasst, this enable using the paint without having to prep, sand, or prime the surface, making it so much more convenient to apply than traditional paint.
The paint supposedly leaves no residue whenever it’s peeled off, so whatever coats you have underneath will remain as they originally were, all while being fully biodegradable, as it’s expected to break down naturally after three years in the landfill. Once peeled, by the way, you can simply throw the film away in the trash or reuse it as a material to put over other items, much like a fabric cover, although we’re not sure how functional it is for use in that situation.
The Glasst Unpaint has been available in Colombia for the past couple of years. It’s now coming to the US and other markets, with pricing set to start at $29.98 for a 1-quart can. According to the outfit, it’s available in over 5,000 different colors.
