While we keep serious concerns about how well the pod-like shape will mesh with the rest of your home gear, the Philips Fidelio SoundSphere does seem like an awfully tempting proposition. Not only does it combine two of Philips’ successful products (Fidelio docks and Soundsphere speakers), it comes with built-in support for Apple’s Airplay.
The speakers themselves are based off the SoundSphere line’s curved design, with a free-floating tweeter on top of each individual unit to deliver sound in all directions. We’re guessing the Fidelio part lies in the fact that it includes a coaster-like wireless docking station, in case you prefer to have your iPod standing on a table.
The big selling point for the the Philips Fidelio SoundSphere speakers, of course, is the Airplay support, which lets you use iTunes to stream music directly from a computer or iOS device (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) over WiFi . Other types of audio can be streamed the same way, too, giving you a full set of speakers for enjoying the cheesy effects while you play NBA Jam on your iPhone or listening to the car chases while watching an action movie on the iPad.
We can’t find any detailed specs for the Philips Fidelio SoundSphere. It’s due in stores this coming May, though, priced at €799 ($1,113).
