Exceed Hyzer Titanium Hatchet Combines Compact Size with Swappable Head and Skeletonized Handle

There’s no shortage of hatchets out there that you can use to carry out chopping tasks using one hand. Their compact size makes them very portable, while bringing enough utility to carry out even tougher tasks in the outdoors. The Exceed Hyzer Titanium Hatchet takes those qualities up a notch by integrating some clever design touches.

Billed as a “modular titanium hatchet,” the tool boasts a CNC-machined skeletonized handle to minimize the overall weight, as well as a modular head that you can swap out for replacement units. Whether you need a hatchet for jobs around the farm, chores at the campsite, or just to cut wood for the fire pit in the backyard where your electric chainsaw feels too overkill, this thing definitely has the chops to get it done.

The Exceed Hyzer Titanium Hatchet is equipped with a stylish-looking skeletonized handle cut in 6AL-4V Grade 5 titanium that’s been CNC machined from a solid block of the light and hard metal. According to the outfit, they went with this particular type of titanium for its ability to dampen vibrations, as proven by its extensive use among premium hammers in the market. That handle is, pretty much, the star of the show here, as it has quite the complex design that, the outfit claims, required three years of designing, machining, and refining to get right. How does it feel in hand with all those grooves and cutouts? We’re not entirely sure, but you should be able to easily wrap it in paracord if you end up not liking the feel of the skeletonized grip.

They pair that handle with an axe head made from tempered D2 steel that’s been rated to a hardness level of 60 to 61 HRC. It measures 4.5 inches wide and 0.3 inches thick. The head, by the way, is nested inside the top of the handle where it’s screwed down to ensure it stays in place even during heavy use.

The Exceed Hyzer Titanium Hatchet is available in two handle sizes: the Full version is 9.75 inches long and the Mini measures 8.15 inches in length. Truth be told, both seem reasonably compact enough for portable use, but it’s still nice enough to have the option, in case the 9.75-inch version is a bit too long for your specific setup. According to Exceed, the full-length version with the 0.3-inch thick head weighs 13.8 ounces, while the smaller one tips the scales at 12.3 ounces.

They offer a good selection of options, too, so you can tailor the hatchet further to your liking. You can choose from three finishes, including stonewashed, gray blasted/gray PVD, and black PVD/dark gray DLC if you prefer a contrasting appearance. They can also put on a paracord handle wrap if you’re not a fan of the bare metal grip, with eight colors available. Other options include a USA-made Horween leather snap sheath, a Kydex molded sheath with belt clip, and two additional sizes of axe heads (one thinner and one thicker than the preinstalled head).
