Different sleeping bags accommodate different types of sleeping. Some give you plenty of room to move around. Others wrap you up tightly like a mummy in an Egyptian tomb. And there are all sorts of specialty ones, such as this bag for side sleepers. The Big Agnes Torchlight UL puts versatility at the forefront by allowing you to customize it based on how you want to sleep.
That’s right, it’s a sleeping bag you can spread out for extra room when you want space to toss and turn, all while letting you tighten up and bundle the material into a mummy fit when sleeping in cold weather. It doesn’t end there, either, as it allows you to customize the fit in individual areas, ensuring it will support your preferred sleeping positions, whatever they may be.
The Big Agnes Torchlight UL is a custom-fit sleeping bag that starts off as a standard mummy bag – you know, the ones that are contoured to the body with tapered lower sections that’s ideal for using during cold weather, since it locks in your body warmth pretty tightly while wrapping you in more of the insulated material. For customizing fit, it has expandable zippered panels on the left and right sides that run from the shoulder to the footbox, allowing you to add five inches of width on each side, 10 inches total, to create more room for your body. Even better, there are zippers on both ends of the panels, so you can loosen just the footbox, the shoulders, the upper body, or the lower body, depending on what you need.
In mummy form, the sleeping bag offers 60 inches of room in the shoulder area, 54 inches in the hips, and 36 inches in the lower body for the regular model, all while offering 62 inches, 56 inches, and 38 inches, respectively, for the longer model. With the expandable panels, though, that regular model can expand to 70 inches, 64 inches, and 46 inches for the shoulders, hips, and lower body, respectively, while the longer version provides 72 inches, 66 inches, and 48 inches.
The Big Agnes Torchlight UL is the ultralight version of this sleeping bag, which gets a lightweight ripstop polyester shell fabric with a water-repellent finish and a lightweight polyester taffeta lining with a wick finish for optimal moisture management. To further shore up its “ultralight” build, it’s insulated using 850-fill DownTek down, which uses up significantly less material while providing the same warmth level.
Aside from the customizable fit and lightweight build, the sleeping bag also boasts a body-mapped baffle construction to optimize thermal efficiency (it’s warm at all the right places), as well as a jacket-style hood opening that contours to the shape of your face for a snug fit during sleep. Other features include a low-profile cordlock on the hood for one-handed cinching, an insulated tube opening for sealing out drafts, 3D draft tube on the zipper for heat retention, a vaulted footbox construction for better loft, and an internal mesh stash pocket for valuables. It comes with a storage sack and stuff sack.
The Big Agnes Torchlight UL is available now, priced starting at $350.
