A house where a family was brutally murdered probably isn’t high on most people’s list of ideal homes. Unless you’re a horror buff, a serial killer or somewhere in the vicinity of both. In case you are, start counting your pennies, because the real Amityville Horror House is now for sale.
If the name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the subject of both a 1977 book (The Amityville Horror) and a subsequent movie series that came out between 1979 and 2005. The house listed for sale, 112 Ocean Ave., is the site where Ronald DeFeo Jr. brutally killed his six family members during their sleep back in 1974 and, according to accounts, has been haunted by the spirits of the victims since.
The legendary Amityville Horror House is a three-story Dutch Colonial home, situated on a waterfront, with a commanding view of the Amityville River. As the name makes obvious, it’s situated in Amityville, a suburb in the South Shore of Long Island, New York. It has five bedrooms, three and a half baths, a renovated boat house, deck, patio and is set on over a quarter acre of landscaped property. Plus, there are murderous ghosts. Lots and lots of them.
No word on the listing whether that last bit is true, of course. But, hey, I saw that movie and this house is terrifying. Definitely one for horror fans to make their fellow Fangoria-readin’ buddies drool with envy. Or someone who doesn’t believe in that supernatural nonsense and just wants a large house in the ‘burbs with some personality.
Ready to scare yourself silly? The Amityville Horror House is listed for $1.15 million.
