I used to think colanders — those bowls with holes in them for draining pasta — were absolutely perfect. They’re so perfect, in fact, that the damn things don’t need to be improved. That is, until the Trap Door Colander showed me the way.
While I’ve never had a problem with regular colanders, a big part of the world apparently didn’t. Turns out, people hated the occasional spills that occur when you turn that strainer to dump all its contents down your plate. After all, a load of vegetables spilled across the counter and the floor are never fun.
With the Trap Door Colander, that won’t be a problem. Made by Farberware, it looks just like any regular strainer with one big difference: it includes a pair of trap doors sitting at the bottom. That way, you don’t have to turn the strainer over to transfer those two pounds of penne to a plate. Just hit the door levers installed near the left and right handles and all that grub comes trickling down. You can dispatch each trap door individually, too, so you can slow down or speed up the rate that the pasta falls down straight to your plate.
Construction is all plastic, with measurements set at 5.12x 11.54 x 13.58 inches. The whole thing can hold up to 5 quarts of content at any time, which should be adequate for preparing meals for a small family.
The Farberware Trap Door Colander is available now, priced at $14.99.
