When a new Lambo comes out, the world takes notice. It’s tough not to pay attention when a vehicle looks like the the Lamborgini Aventador, after all, the Italian marque’s latest show-stealing supercar.
Taking the reigns from the Lamborghini Murcielago as the top bull of the automaker’s stable, the vehicle doesn’t simply remake the ten-year V12 standout. According to Lamborghini, they wiped the slate clean with new technologies for the engine, chassis, cabin structure, transmission, all-wheel-drive and a whole host of other components, turning out a ride that’s as close to 100-percent-different as you can get against its long-running (and often mistakenly pronounced) predecessor.
The Lamborgini Aventador hides a 691-hp 6.5-litre V12 engine round the back, pushing it to clear a 0 to 60 in just 2.9 seconds and hitting top speeds of 217 mph. This is mated to the all-new Lamborghini ISR seven-speed gearbox, which allows the vehicle to shift gears almost instantaneously. Drawing on F1 systems, the double wishbone-with-pushrod suspension will keep the wheels perfectly aligned regardless of where the terrain shunts them — allowing for a smoother driving experience without sacrificing handling precision.
The monocoque chassis and body are wrought entirely from carbon fiber composites, making them extra strong and remarkably lightweight at the same time. The latest interpretation of Lambo’s unmistakable lines is absolutely gorgeous, too, while the cabin brings the striking aircraft-style instrumentation first seen in the brand’s Reventon concept.
Currently stealing hearts at the Geneva Motor Show, the Lamborghini Aventador will go on sale in the summer of 2011. US pricing starts at $379,700.
