Want to know what happens to those large oil cans when they’re not delivering petrol or holding toxic waste that’s covertly dumped in the river? Well, some of them end up as Oil Can Cupboards, kitchen shelving solutions for those who like to dress their pantries with industrial style.
Handmade by craftsmen in St. Pauli, Hamburg, Germany, the portable storage furniture is made from previously-used 55 gallon drum containers that end up around the Hamburg Harbor. Don’t worry, the cans aren’t beat up — the ones they choose are inspected for minimal damage and no leaks.
The Oil Can Cupboards feature three levels of shelves inside, accessible via a large door cut out on the drum’s cylindrical body.  A handle is attached to the hinged door for easy opening and closing, while two guitar strings keep it steady. Magnets are attached on the top and bottom corners of the door for closing shut.
Since the cans are portable, you can stack them on top of each other to create a large wall of shelves anywhere in the house. The drum containers are painted in either a white, maroon, red or black finish to cover up any small scratches.
Because of the size, it appears the Oil Can Cupboards are only available in Germany for now.  However, they are looking at options to ship internationally, so drop them an email if you’re interested. Price is €350.
