Beer and fried munchies go hand in hand. This year, however, they coalesce into one with the Fried Beer, a crunchy pocket pie filled with everyone’s favorite 21 and over beverage.
If you don’t mind the health consequences (too much fried food can turn you into a mutant – really), food tastes really good when deep fried. Many contestants at the Big Tex Choice Awards at the Texas State Fair know it too, using deep frying as their cooking method of choice to produce decidedly unusual treats. A sampling of past entries in the contest include such ridiculous concoctions as Deep Fried Latte, Texas Fried Cookie Dough, Deep Fried Butter and Fried Coke.
Fried Beer consists of a pocket of pretzel dough filled with beer, summarily dumped into a vat of boiling oil. There aren’t much details about how it’s served. Me, I’d probably want it in the freezer for a couple of minutes. Warm beer just sounds gross.
According to creator Mark Zamble, he underwent a painful process of trial and error to come up with the treat, with most of his early efforts resulting in boiling oil exploding as soon as the experiment hit the fryer. He has already filed for both a patent and a trademark for his alcoholic snack.
Beer wasn’t meant to be fried, but I’ll hold off on my judgment until I taste one. I guess we’ll know how good the judges think it is come Labor Day weekend, when the winners are announced. If it wins, the Fried Beer will join other winners on the grounds of the Texas State Fair beginning September 24.
