We’re a mere few weeks away from Dune: Part Two coming to cinemas, so it’s a great time to actually start busting out any Dune toys you have in the shelf. In case you want something new to really get you excited about seeing the next movie, LEGO’s got you covered with the Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter.
That’s right, you can spend the lead-up to the new movie’s opening building a model of the House Atreides ‘thopter aircraft from the 2021 film, so you can take control of the legendary vehicle and use it to navigate above the seemingly endless sands of Arrakis. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the books, a newer fan from the films, or just someone who appreciates sick-looking LEGO aircrafts, we have a feeling this thing will find a welcome place in your collection.
The LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter lets you build the dragonfly-inspired aircraft from the film, recreating its helicopter-like shape, dragonfly-like wings, and two-person cockpit in great detail. The wings are easily the standout element here, being the largest ever in any LEGO model. As such, they also get plenty of movement, so the wings can actually flap like the actual aircraft will do in the air, as well as fold inwards whenever the vehicle is parked in its docking bay. A control lever behind the wings lets you perform all those movements, by the way, so you can feel like the whole thing’s really moving on its own.
A dial on the aircraft’s body can deploy both the landing gear and the rear ramp, as well as retract them once your aircraft has taken to the air. Sadly, the rear ramp doesn’t really lead to any room in the back, so you can’t load up minifigs as passengers (but you can pretend they’re getting on and off anyway).
The LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter has a cockpit that can open from the side, allowing up to two of your minifigs to board and pilot the aircraft. It’s a very detailed cockpit, too, with plenty of elements that make it feel like the actual cockpit from the film. While it does look like it has weapons installed, they don’t have any actual firing mechanisms, so it’s probably best to just use this to fly over the planet’s vast deserts, rather than trying to launch an all-out attack.
When assembled with the wings folded out, the vehicle measures 22 x 31 x 9 inches (length x width x height), so this thing will take a good chunk of room on any shelf or table. It comes with 1,369 parts, by the way, so while it should make for a challenging build, it shouldn’t take as long as some of LEGO’s bigger, more complicated models. They also include a total of eight minifigures, namely Paul Atreides, Leto Atreides, Lady Jessica, Gurney Halleck, Chani, Liet Kynes, Duncan Idaho, and Baron Harkonnen decked in his very, very long robe.
The LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter is slated to ship at the end of the month. It’s available for preorder now.
