Getting a 4K2K TV now may sound overkill, but when you consider the television to be the central mecca of your abode, there’s really no reason to shun the best consumer tech has to offer. And the Sony XBR 4K TV definitely sits up there in the high echelons.
Sony’s new flagship set features a massive 84 inches of display, boasting a 3840 x 2160 resolution. While neither your HD feed nor your Bluray collection has that much detail, it probably won’t be long before you start seeing content in that insane resolution, especially if you like to stay on the cutting edge of entertainment media.
Even without native 4K content, the Sony XBR 4K TV will happily upscale your puny 1080p Blurays using its new X-Reality PRO Picture Engine, so you can rewatch your movies and see them like never before. Of course, it integrates archaic technologies like full HD 3D, too, along with dynamic edge LED, Motionflow XR 960 and local dimming. If you were wondering how well it will play with your sound system, you may want to reconsider — it packs a 50-watt sound system all on its own, with 10 total speakers and 5.1 virtual surround.
It features built-in WiFi (so you can steam movies directly), Skype, DLNA support and, of course, access to the Sony Entertainment Network. Bonus feature for gamers: it’s so big you can literally do two-player games (think FPS or racing) with no split screen! It measures 44.75 x 84.25 x 3.6 inches and weighs 176.3 pounds.
Ready to bring the future into your living room? Not so fast. No word yet on exact release date or pricing, but expect it to go well north of $20,000.
