The Pebble Watch is still, arguably the best wearable consumer gadget available today. And while we love its functionality, the design could definitely use a little style injection. That’s exactly what we seem to be getting with the Pebble Steel, which casts the pioneering smartwatch in a more elegant material.
Instead of the plastic body of the original, this new version is forged in CNC-machined stainless steel, taking the device’s refinement to a whole different level. That means, you no longer have to leave the beloved wrist companion at home when suiting up in more dapper threads — you can now wear it to the mayor’s gala, the charity dinner, and next month’s meeting with the heads of state. Or to your cousin’s wedding, if those previous events aren’t quite in your plate.
The Pebble Steel is, essentially, the same Pebble smartwatch clad in a classier and slimmer shell, complete with the same smart hardware, wireless connectivity, and ePaper display. The case is waterproof up to 5 ATM, with the screen clad in durable Corning Gorilla Glass that’s reinforced with an anti-fingerprint coat. Like the original, it comes with 5 to 7 days of use on a single charge, a tri-color LED indicator, and full compatibility with all existing Pebble apps. Each one includes a matching metal band and an alternate leather strap, so you can change up the style to better suit your outfits.
Aside from the new watch, the company also announced the launch of the Pebble Appstore, which can be accessed from both iOS and Android platforms. New apps are also in store for demo in their CES appearance, including ones from Pandora and iControl.
Preorders are now open for the Pebble Steel, with shipments slated for January 28th. Price is $249.
