I have no idea how to make tortilla. If I had to guess, though, it takes a lot of mixing, kneading, and baking – basically, a lot of time and a lot of effort that most of us just don’t have the resources for. While pre-made tortillas are readily available from the grocery, Flatev thinks their fresh tortilla machine is going to serve your needs a whole lot better.
Designed to make fresh tortilla with the same convenience as Keurig’s single-serve coffeemakers, the appliance literally makes freshly-baked tortilla from a single pod of dough. That’s right. Just insert a pod, press a button, and out comes fresh, hot tortilla in under 90 seconds. Whether you’re making tacos, fajitas, or taquitos for dinner, this thing makes the fresh tortilla part quick and easy.
The Flatev is a countertop appliance measuring 11 x 14 x 15 inches (w x h x l), with a drawer sized to hold six tortillas at a time, so you can cook one pod after another without taking the tortilla out every time. An integrated warmer will keep that half-dozen stash of flatbread toasty throughout their stay inside the drawer, allowing you to postpone eating without the bread getting cold. It produces tortillas measuring 5.5 to 6 inches in diameter, with a thickness that the outfit claims is around twice that of store-bought tortillas.
Do note, you’ll have to buy a fresh pod for each tortilla you’re going to make, so it’s not exactly going to be cheap. And while you can probably try to reuse a pod with your own dough, the outfit claims the machine isn’t designed for that, so try at your own risk.
A Kickstarter campaign is currently running for Flatev. Pledges to reserve a unit starts at $239.
